Why does a car with a SBC have a faster 60 foot, than the same car with a BBC? Inertia

As Wayne Gapp (from the Gapp and Roush team that won a lot of early 70's NHRA races) explains, and he was the engineer in charge of Fords 429 racing program for NASCAR and drag racing ....

NHRA was still running with the seven pounds per cubic inch rule .... under those rules, Chrysler won every race, because their Hemi was a much better motor than the Chevy or Ford.

It wasn’t long before Bill Jenkins was petitioning the NHRA to have the rules altered to allow the use of a small block engine in a Vega at the same seven pounds per cubic inch configuration.

The NHRA bought into the idea, thinking that it was “six of one, a half-dozen of the other”, I guess.

Problem was, if they had consulted their physics books they would have realized that it wasn’t all that straightforward. There was a thing called inertia, which no one took into consideration.

Simply stated, if you take a 2,700-pound big-block car and a 2,300-pound small-block car and you let out the clutch on each one, it’s the inertia off the line that determines the performance during the first 60-feet of the pass, not the horsepower.

In other words, if you kick a cement block and a block of wood, quess which one will travel the farthest? So, naturally, Jenkins’ little Vega just jumped off the starting line and consequently it killed the Chryslers during the 1972 season.”

Tyrone Malone and the AMT Super Boss (1976-1982 era)

Jerry (Tyrone) Malone demonstrated patriotism in the way most fitting for him: He re-customized his renowned Boss Truck of America into the ”Super Boss” racing rig.

After Jerry Malone had the truck ultra-customized, he also changed his name to Tyrone Malone, “Mister D.D.D,” which referred to Daredevil Diesel Driver.

The SIAI, founded in Milan in 1915, became famous after 1922 with the advent as chief designer engineer Marchetti, became the first manufacturer in Italy of airboats and seaplanes for sporty nautical tourism.

The T-108 Freri was restored a few years ago by the boatyard Venetian Dalla Pieta.

The boat belongs to the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, who turned to Giorgio Dalla Pieta, worthy successor of his father Bepi, sophisticated manufacturer of pleasure boats and racing, he offered to do the work without charge, by pure passion. The condition of the Idroscivolante was critical when he arrived in the boatyard.

The restoration of the hulls required a complete revision of the original wood that had been patiently and skillfully given a new profile in laminated spruce. Tthen covered with sheets of plywood glued with marine epoxy and finished in polyurethane paint that mimics the colors and patterns of the original which was still a trace.

Curiously, on the side of the hulls was written XII raid Pavia-Venice. But the twelfth raid took place in 1952, but the last appearance of this airboat to Pavia-Venice was in 1939, the eleventh edition of the raid. Then, of course, Colonel Frere him prepare for the 1940 edition, the twelfth, in search of the long-awaited victory, but WW2 delayed all sports for the duration until society was restored.

August 1923, Rockville County Fair races Maryland

Good Spark Garage blog has done a wonderful post about the Mint 400... terrific journalism!

I was slightly familiar with the Mint 400, that it was a race in Nevada in the 60's or 70's sponsored by and as a publicity stunt by a casino, and that Steve McQueen, Parnelli Jones, Walker Evans, Ironman Stewart, Mickey Thompson, and the Unders had participated.

What I learned from this article was a LOT...

The casino occurred due to the fortune made by areal estate developer that got govt contracts, made a fortune with the Sun City Arizona development (which made the cover of Time Magazine for it's success), and with a couple partners... bought the New York Yankees.

In 1971 Hunter Thompson was sent by Sports Illustrated to cover the event, they then balked at the copy, and so Rolling Stone Magazine ran it... but the time in Vegas gave Hunter the material for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"

in 1972 the promo and publicity were increased by getting women to model and strut in bikinis, Vanna White and Linda Carter were two of them

A terrific article with great photos: http://goodsparkgarage.com/the-mint-400-great-american-off-road-race/#more-3460
