one of the worst vehicles I've heard of, with a terrible review from Car and Driver (but I still like it)

Don’t let the badge mislead you. The Jeep Commander commands its brand only in name. It is among the youngest nameplates in the Jeep lineup, and its sales figures command little more than an exasperated groan.

Like the disaster that beset another beleaguered commander, General George Custer, at Little Big Horn, what happened to the Jeep’s sales is well chronicled: The price of gas bloated, killing demand for SUVs; and then the value of everything else imploded, killing demand for cars of all types.

(There is a V-6, but just because you have a rope and are near train tracks doesn’t mean you have to tie yourself to them and wait for the 10:15.)

Passing power in this Jeep is the stuff of dreams, as in, “keep dreaming.” With all the aerodynamic grace of a billboard in a tornado, the Commander needs the driver to leg in for a transmission kickdown just to overcome the drag of its upright windshield and grille at highway speeds.

Automobile Magazine had a cool idea to compare dashboard designs from the 70's and today

by the way, I was in a 2013 Camaro today, selling as a used car, and the damn thing has a HUD display. Heads up display of the speedometer... I haven't seen one of those since 1989. Why don't all cars have these yet?

Street Rodder Premium new issue on the rack

Motor Trend Classic is killed off again. Bastards.

once again they let us subscribers know only 6 months late, and think we'll be satisfied getting Motor Trend magazine. Why can't they kill Motor Trend and keep making a magazine I actually respect?

It might be relevant to point out that the editor of Motor Trend Classic has only done stories of new expensive cars since Feb 2013 http://www.motortrend.com/staff/angus_mackenzie/

they still have it up on their website http://www.motortrend.com/classic_cars/ and advertise selling you a subscription

but the postcard I got in the mail today says it's dead, and my subscription is going to be filled by the regular (boring) Motor Trend

Mopars were hated and slandered pretty bad by the March 1971 issue of Hot Cars and High Performance Stockers, their stupidity is likely why they don't exist anymore

Holy shit. They called the 'Bird a turd. Ignorant? Instant awesome and collectible. Nice spelling of Gotham you assholes

the only on call hoodscoop I can think of on any car ever made. Their sarcasm aside, it was cool, tuff, and boss

Contrarily, I think the 71 Barracuda was very good looking due to the grill and gills

Looks like a Duster, and yeah, it's paint wasn't high quality, because the Duster was about the cheapest car you could by from Plymouth

Might be a jargon term, but "Limp"? Dimple maybe

thanks to J for sending me this from the March 1971 Hot Cars and High Performance Stockers

I just found a site where you can read the entire issues of some of the latest magazines. No sign up, no registration

above, Trucking Magazine http://www.scribd.com/doc/148167986/Magazine

or AutoWeek: http://www.scribd.com/doc/177196833/Autoweek-14-October-2013

or Off Road http://www.scribd.com/doc/177581585/Off-Road-2013-12

also Mopar Muscle http://www.scribd.com/doc/177575431/Mopar-Muscle-December-2013  which is more advertising than content, when comparing square inches of  copy of either, that I stopped wasting 30 bucks a year for a subscription. I really am not going to rebuild my trans 3 times a year, the engine 2wice a year, and do intake swaps 2wice a year either... seriously, just show me cool cars and throw away all the tech/rebuild crap

I just learned of Australian Hot Rodder .com... the online side of a magazine a lot like The Rodders Journal, high quality photos, clear articles, not mashed around advertising like most mags

they just finished issue 3, and you can buy the issues 1 and 2, so if you want to get started with a magaznie that is just beginning, and collect the whole set from the day they started... here's your best bet.

You can even preview the issues http://www.australianhotrodder.com.au/files/AHR-Issue01-Sneak-Peek.pdf
http://www.australianhotrodder.com.au/files/AHR-Issue02-Sneak-Peek.pdf
http://www.australianhotrodder.com.au/files/AHR-Issue03-Sneak-Peek.pdf

with stories and photos spanning the hot rod world from mild upgrades to 30's Fords, to dragsters, traditional Ts and prostreeters

See what I mean?

Hot Rod Magazine just did a great comparison of ratchet wrenches, online, and in the newest issue

http://www.hotrod.com/feature_stories/1310_ratchet_handles_torture_test/ for the results... the last one on the left is a Proto, which started out as the company Plumb. No Snap On, SK, or Blackhawk, just some ordinary swap meet wrenches, except for that Proto

The Rodders Journal is having a contest, or a facebook challenge, but they're opening up to giving a reader/subscriber/car owner a shot at a feature article

Here are the instructions for how to enter:
You must post a photo of your car to The Rodder's Journal Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RoddersJournal?utm_source=TRJ+Newsletter+List&utm_campaign=5238127ed2-Your+Car+Photographed+in+TRJ+7_25_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_016fd74f35-5238127ed2-85734653 by 5 p.m. PDT on August 9.

Submissions can also be emailed to customerservice@roddersjournal.com, and will be added to the “Contents Contest” album on the TRJ Facebook page.
The number of photo “likes” will be considered in the judging process, but will not be the sole determining factor of the award.
Criteria will include compatibility with other editorial content in the issue, color, make, model, and year of car, etc.
Note: Photos must be submitted by 5 p.m. PDT on August 9 to be eligible. Photography of the winning vehicle will take place in the TRJ studio in South San Francisco, California, during the week of August 19, 2013.

The contest winner will be selected on Monday, August 12, by the editorial team at The Rodder’s Journal, and will be notified by Tuesday, August 13. In determining the winning hot rod or custom

Bethany Hamilton and teammate place 8th in Morocco's Gazelle Rally

found in Automobile Magazine, July issue... what an amazing news story to have in a car magazine! No one else has this story but Automobile Magazine is my guess!

Bethany will be on one of five US teams participating in the 2013 Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles. The well-known international competition, celebrating its 23rd year, will take place in France and Morocco from March 16th – March 31st. The off-road rally raid is unique in format – nine days of off-road driving competition using traditional dead reckoning navigation, outdated maps, no GPS or outside assistance while on course. It is considered one of the toughest all-female sporting events on the planet.
Bethany’s teammate, X-Games gold medalist navigator Chrissie Beavisis an architect by trade, but has top-notch skills in rally racing. She is also a driving instructor, rally racer and her capabilities as a mechanic and ace fabricator have led to appearances in popular TV shows such as “Monster Garage” as well as commentator roles for ESPN.

Any wonder I'm a fan and subscriber?

With its unique concept involving eco-driving without excess speed, based on traditional navigation without GPS and for women only, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc was the precursor to a new vision for auto rallies.

In our constant quest for quality, the environment has always been one of our main areas of focus. In 2010, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc became the first auto rally in the world to obtain international environmental certification (ISO 14001:2004).

Yup, I just checked Google news, and not a word about it.

However,... very cool news for women, Bethany is a spokeman for Proctor and Gamble's Tampax business, and is hosting a contest for young women:

Tampax and pro-surfer Bethany Hamilton are joining forces to shine a spotlight on awesomely active girls - those who have the confidence to get off the sideline and into the game. The Awesomely Active Girls Challenge is designed to celebrate and reward girls who share pictures of moments when they have been awesomely active. In addition to being featured on the Tampax Facebook page, girls have the opportunity to win a great prize, which includes a chance for their photo to appear in Tampax Pearl Active advertising.

For one month, from June 21 until July 21, girls can enter the Awesomely Active Girls Challenge by submitting a photo of them taking on their favorite activity with 140 character caption on Facebook.com/Tampax. Beginning July 29 and through October 6 the community can place votes for their favorite moment. Each week, a winner will be selected and highlighted as the "Awesomely Active Girl of the Week," not only receiving the spotlight but also $500

1953 Riley gets a 2nd breath as a sports car, with a Volvo turbo engine. This got my attention, but not enough to buy the magazine

the magazine is Practical  Performance Car  http://ppcmag.co.uk
they have nothing about the car on their website, typical magazine website. Months after they've taken the photos and written the article, they still won't have the info from a magazine on the shelf simultaneous on their website...because they figure you won't buy the hardcopy if you can get the info for free. Right now I can't find info about the car or the owner on the web

Best issue I've seen yet, Motor Trend Classic

Lots of great stuff inside, and the legit Vette given to an astronaut on the cover next to a NASA lunar rover prototype doesn't look too bad either!

Best interview of Bob Bondurant I've ever seen.

the article on the cars that weren't the stars of the movies (in Herbie the Love Bug the car that was chosen for the article was the Throndyke Special ... an Apollo 3500 GT http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-thorndyke-special-64-apollo-3500-gt.html  ) is well done
