Also, a resemblance to the 1917 Golden Submarine of Barney Oldfield

I guess this is a good example of concurrent evolution when form begets function... to slip through the air resistance, most designs will end up the same when built for simplicity and lightweight racing applications

It's likely that the Benz was designed 10-20 years after Oldfields sub, and 10 years before the bellytanks were made into dry lakes racers, so it's well bookended by American hot rodders for good company.

1929 Majestic... I didn't realize the innovative steering they used, and that the paint had a "crackle" factory option

my previous post http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2009/12/1929-majestic.html has a good and thorough variety of photos, of a couple bikes, from different angles, but I was more fascinated by the overall design than the steering.. and didn't notice it's very uncommon

pillar rods allow sprung vertical movement, and the steering rod can be seen connected to the central hub by a 'c' shaped lever. The front hub has plenty to do, with a large bearing and brake mechanism inside.

designed by Loewy, but built by the Derham coachbuilding company... it's unusual appearance is a reminder that Loewy also was the guy that came up with the Studebaker nose, and the Avanti
