Porter's Special, with a center seat, 300SL

found on http://eknude.tumblr.com

Hollywood bodyshop owner Chuck Porter built this modified Mercedes 300SL Gullwing from a wreck in 1955. He paid $500 for it at a junkyard. A variety of engines powered this special including a Hilborn injected Corvette mill. http://www.mercedesheritage.com/2010/gullwings-and-roadsters-on-the-track-in-the-50s-and-60s/

above from http://www.hemmings.com/users/138115/story/119.html where the story is told by Chuck Porter's son "This car went through a lot of engines and different drivers, and won a lot of races. My father raced it from 1955 to 1959, then sold it. It has been featured in many magazine and book articles, and was the featured car that Cornell Wilde drove in the 1950's movie "Devil's Hairpin". It was also in the movie "On the Beach".

if a yellow streamlined race car, the name Chuck Porter, and a yellow truck strikes a note, it's likely due to the couple of photos I've posted here http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2013/02/a-quick-view-of-some-of-interesting.html

From Eknude tumblr, some great vintage racing photos

1952 CARRERA PANAMERICANA. MERCEDES 300SL W194

a gullwing Mercedes found in Cuba, severely rusted and basically junk. Once a wonderful car... until a part broke and it was scavenged to keep others on the road I suppose

Also in Cuba are other very rare and incredible cars like a 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom I. Its coachwork has been recognized as the handiwork of Letourneur and Marchand of Paris. http://caristas.blogspot.com/2012/11/rich-relics.html

farther into the archives of Caristas.blogspot I found

and among other Vettes, this 1954:

the personal cars of Fidel and Raul Castro, as well as the Chevrolet Impala of Che Guevara, Mr. Maestre said he would like to secure what is perhaps Cuba's most important car: Ernest Hemingway's Chrysler.

Eduardo Mesejo Maestre, curator of the Depósito del Automóvil, the country’s official antique car museum arranged Treasury Department permission for Tom Cotter to travel directly to Havana from Miami on cultural exchange visas. Call it spark plug diplomacy.

We were told of the country’s dire economy, where street sweepers and doctors make the same wages. So auto repair for the island’s vintage cars becomes a creative endeavor: shampoo is used for brake fluid; iron pipes are cut up for piston rings; Coca-Cola is used to loosen rusty bolts; and cars are painted with sponges, then buffed with toothpaste.

“We call it the Cuban way,” Abel Contreras de la Guardia, our translator and tour guide, said. “We do anything to keep our cars running.”

Depósito del Automóvil is at Oficios No. 13, Habana Vieja, C.P. 10100, La Habana, Cuba. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

La Carrera Panamerica, by Pink Floyd, the documentary of 1992

this video was a good look at the 1990's running of the race, and it included clips from the 1950's and 60's to show the history of the race. It did a good job of explaining what brought the race to being, and how it's changed. One of the most unusual cars that has been in the race is the above, which I think is a Cadillac with an airplane greenhouse mated to the top instead of the cars windows, A and C pillars, and roof

it appears in the video at minute 56 and 50 seconds , and 57 and 10 seconds
