train built because none existed, strange use of disposable income...
It is the only example of a LNER Peppercorn Class A1 class locomotive in existence, the entirety of the original production batch having been scrapped without preservation.
Actual construction of the Tornado began in 1994, being based at Darlington Works for most of the project, while numerous components such as the boiler were manufactured elsewhere.
The project was financed through fundraising initiatives such as public donations and sponsorship deals; further funding came from hiring Tornado itself on special services. Construction was completed in 2008, and full certification of the locomotive was achieved in January 2009. Having been designed with compliance to modern safety and certification standards, Tornado has been conducting passenger services on the UK rail network and on mainline-connected heritage railways since 2008

I learned about this when the goof balls on Top Gear season 13 raced this train, a motorcycle, and some car. Clark had to shovel a lot of coal
Top gear does another crazy stunt, putting and Audi and a Jaguar on train tracks

Morris Minor hubcap guitar and Seasick Steve on Top Gear, cut to minute 5:50
Top Gear Season 14, episode 7
That video has been deleted, so I looked around, and found that he used a Hudson hub cap, spatula, garden hoe handle guitar on a British TV show http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13600391
And if you are impressed with his bit of music, you'll be blown away with what he can do with a one string diddley-bow. A 2x4 and and amp, that's it.
